What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare? (and comment on the struggles of others at the lock gates ....)

There's something about a canal side which divides the narrow boat owners and their energetic efforts from the casual observer slightly envious yet free to criticise the boatman. It's all to do with the pace of life.
