Orford Ness

June 2003

Orford is a small port for sailors and also a jetty for visiting the National Trust site of Orford Ness

We found Orford Ness fascinating with bird life, wildflowers, shingle beach, but also WWII relics from its times as a military training and experimental area.

Well worth a visit.

The Jolly Sailor at Orford

... is a pleasant, unpretentious, local with perfectly adequate though not luxurious accommodation. Very convenient for Orford Ness, boating and walking.

It's a good, busy local close to the jetty, with food of good value and particularly splendid breakfasts.

We intended to return, though since, we have heard that the pub has moved on - in landlords and certainly in price - since our visit, but we are pleased to have enjoyed it at a very comfortable and economical stage in its life.

It raises the interesting question of improvement. It's a tricky thing to move a pub on and catch new customers without alienating the existing lot. Some pubs never change - The Olde Cheshire Cheese in Fleet Street, the Queen's Head at Newton - while others go all gastropub and enter a different zone entirely.
