To Anglesey
In July 2017 we drove 250 miles across the country to Holy Island on the tip of Anglesey to complete our ambition of walking in every traditional Welsh county, to add to our previous achievement of walking in every traditional English county. While at home in Cambridge the skies opened and deluged our gardens, in Anglesey the weather was kind - even generous - and we exchanged precautionary waterproofs for floppy hats and sun cream on several walks around the coast of Anglesey. As we have done occasionally in the past, and because it was the culmination of our walks, we came with our wives, who enjoyed it too. We took lunch at the Liverpool Arms at Menai Bridge, and in the afternoon, after registering at Blackthorn Farm on Holy Island (a campsite with a good b&b, fine views and enough rooms for the eight of us) we popped over to South Stack to stroll around, look at the lighthouse, the birds (RSPB South Stack Cliffs) and the well preserved neolithic round house remains.
On Saturday we spent the morning on a coastal walk from Moelfre Bay and lunch at the Kinmel Arms . This is on the opposite (east) coast from where we are staying and is about 25 miles from Blackthorn Farm. There is a lifeboat station and memorials to The Royal Charter which foundered with the loss of more than 400 lives in a hurricane in 1859.
On Sunday morning we took another coastal walk at Rhosneigr on the west coast of the island, (Walking World id=7233) finishing with Sunday lunch at the Oystercatcher, Rhosneigr. This is a good area for bird life (chough, guilemot, peregrine, fulmar, puffin and razorbill amongst many others) and we also spotted dolphins. And so we reached our target of walking in all English and Welsh counties. Where next?
