Thurnham Churchyard

 

Thurnham Church ...

is just down the hill from the Black Horse Inn (see previous page) and the churchyard is notable for being well kept.

Also for the grave of Alfred Mynn
whom cricket lovers will recall
as a great early exponent of the game:

As our champion lies a-sleeping underneath the Kentish grass,
Proudly, sadly will we name him - to forget him were a sin.
Lightly lie the turf upon thee, kind and manly Alfred Mynn

30 minutes or so drive away is the wonderful National Trust property of Ightham Mote.

Sorry we had to cheat here because this is some distance from Thurnham, but for folks from Cambridge that's pretty much on the doorstep, so we took a leisurely walk nearby then strolled around the 14th century moated manor house, which is a delight to behold.

Apart from its age, condition, the reflections in the moat and the lovely gardens, in its courtyard is the country's only grade 1 listed dog kennel.
