Jedburgh
is the centre of Roxburghshire and on an important route (A68) between Newcastle and Edinbugh. For me it was sort of en route between Ulverston in the Lake District and Newcastle. This meant driving up the M6 and through the Borders, all of which were beautiful in soft sunlight. I always think that the hills at the north end of the M6 are like sleeping beasts or giant creased velvet cushions. This walk is just a few miles north of Jedburgh at Harestanes Country Park, well signposted near Ancrum, and including the ascent of a hill to the Waterloo Monument on Peniel Heugh. It briefly joins St Cuthbert's Way and the Roman Dere Street. It is id=6169 on Walking World. With good parking and refreshments at Harestanes and good signposting throughout, this is an easy walk through woodland with the more strenuous section up to the monument, from which there are superb views. The return leg from waymark 10 to 11 is rather dull in comparison, but this was a pleasant walk in good conditions. |
