Staying in Kinross, we took a bus to St Andrews on a damp and drizzly day, with cloud so low that one could hardly see out to the choppy sea beyond.
We walked an informal town trail to include the cathedral ruins, the harbour, castle, shopping area, quaint old back streets, university buildings and past various famous golf-related buildings connected to The Royal and Ancient Club. It's a fine old town, home of golf (since at least 1552), of the third oldest university in the English-speaking world, and much more attractive when it's not raining and when the sun is out. We reckon we walked three miles around St Andrews, which added to previous visits here and around the lovely villages of Crail and Pittenween counts as completed walking in Fife. However the Fife Coastal Path continues to appeal and I hope I'll come back and walk the 13 miles from Crail to St Andrews. If you go to Crail (see below) be sure to drop in at the Crail Pottery, where the Grieve family have excellent hand crafted pots for sale. |
