Annan, Dumfriesshire
Starting from the town centre at Annan this is a pleasant walk though a great deal of flotsam and a large number of "dubs" or salt water pools and tidal creeks make it awkward for part of the route. Starting from the town hall this is Walking World walk 5773 and heads off out of town, down to the shore where, for me, the tide was out over the Solent revealing broad areas of wet sand. Here there once was a viaduct opened in 1869 to carry iron ore from Cumberland mines to Lanarkshire steel works. It was 1783 metres long and was dismantled in 1934. Here you can see the "dubs" which need careful navigation. Worse when I was there was that, following fierce storms, all manner of waste and loose timber was stranded atop the floodbank of Annan Merse. The choice was either stumbling over loose wood or wallowing in the boggy Merse .... There's something to be said for stout wellies rather than walking boots for this walk! |
