The Isle of Mull
Traditional Argyllshire covers a substantial area of mainland south west of Fort William and including the islands of Jura, Islay, Colonsay, Mull to name but a few. We have walked here many times, including on that peninsula called Kintyre which feels like an island and is joined to the mainland by a slim strip of land at Tarbert. But here we record a wonderful holiday on Mull, staying at a cottage near the island of Ulva on the west of Mull. We took walks on Ulva (a small island off Mull), across the island from east to west, in the country park around Tobermory, and on the north west coast of Mull, where there is a deserted village, and down by the shore we could see basking sharks just off the coast. From our cottage we could see the weather coming towards us, so had half an hour to choose between roaring fire and crosswords, waterproofs and boots, or sun hats and striding out. Trips to Iona and to the cave at Staffa (Fingal's Cave) and later to Skye and Harris and Lewis were also an exciting part of this trip.
