We hope to get to Holme before the snail ....

The northern half of the Peddars Way ...

... for us began in October 2009, at North Pickenham, where we left off in April.

We ate our sandwiches at Great Palgrave and made our way with speed to Castle Acre where we took a pint at The Ostrich which fortunately is open all day. A burst of energy took us up the road to tick off a further mile or so of the Way.

In the evening we ate very well and very economically at The Albert Victor (named after the Duke of Clarence) which deserved more customers in their pleasant fire-side dining room with straightforward menu and Wherry ale.

Walking the green paths of the Peddars Way. We made use of two cars, parking one in the north, driving the other south then walking back. This allowed us to make our own minds up about how far we walked each day, though in places the drive was as tortuous as the Way was straight.

Starting from Castle Acre, where we stayed at the very pleasant Church Gate tea room and b&b, (strapline: "a beautiful corner of West Norfolk that is forever England") on the next day we made our way to near Anmer and broke for lunch at the Dabbling Duck at Great Missingham.

This is just the perfect place for a civilised country lunch, with sofas by the open fire and a corner of the dining room created as a library - with books to read, not just for show.
