Destination Alnmouth ...
... from our temporary base at Castle View in Durham we set off by train (40 minutes) north to Alnmouth, a delightful village on the fine Northumberland coast and once a busy port. Today busier than usual due to an arts festival which guides visitors around the town. Nevertheless we manage a 5 mile walk following most of Walking World walk number 1560 across fields, along the river Aln, through two golf courses and along the coast ending up in the Red Lion on the high street. We then followed a circuitous path back to the station for an afternoon train to Durham. This was far from the vigorous Cheviot style walk and more of an amble in a pleasant river-and-coast area. Nearby are Bamburgh, Dunstanburgh, Warkworth, The Farne Islands and Lindisfarne amongst other wonderful spots on the Northumbrian coast, but we'll leave that for another day. |
