Foxton Locks

Foxton Locks

Foxton is famous for its long flight of locks and for its short-lived inclined plane (a method of raising and lowering canal boats mechanically without the use of locks).

It's a busy place, in an attractive setting with a boat yard, lots of canal boats in use, two pubs (one recently refurbished and advertising Deuchars, London Pride and Theakstons), a café and a museum. See it on Google map.

We parked, browsed around there for a while before setting off on an interesting and varied 10 mile walk along the canal, through fields and the occasional village (Gumley, Laughton) with a pause for lunch at the Staff of Life at Mowsley. There we ate well from their bar menu and drank Banks Bitter and Jennings Cumberland Bitter.

If you're interested this walk is described in detail at walkingworld.com and it's id=3568. The area is on Google map too.

After a rest back at The Nevill Arms and a stroll around the village (village history here) we indulged in another excellent evening meal (though the restaurant gets rather noisy when full).
