Corfe Castle and the coast
Driving from Lyndhurst after our stroll in Hampshire we parked in Corfe Castle village. The spectacular ruined motte and bailey castle dominates the landscape for miles around. We walked via Kingston church and the spectacular South West Coastal Path, including some awesomely steep steps (- lucky we were descending not climbing up), to Worth Maltravers and had lunch at the very traditional Square and Compass in Worth Maltravers - very welcome in a lunchtime downpour. This was a most enjoyable 9 mile walk through a broad variety of countryside - woodland, breckland, with coastal views, along St Aldhelm's Head. After a rest at The Meadows b&b at Lyndhust My liver and bacon was delicious, but the live music session brought in a large crowd so we made our excuses and left for an early night. After all, when your ageing knees have trembled at every step on this descent an evening with your feet up is very appealing! And tomorrow we would make our second walk in Hampshire, this time the New Forest. |
