Pulham
St Marys
We had a good walk around Hoxne and finished up in The Swan. Next day we visited Pulham St Mary's where we found it was famous for hosting airships after the first world war. THe extraordinary stories recounted here include a journey in an airship over the Atlantic in 1919 - it took 108 hours and the ship carried 4,900 gallons of petrol. Landing was a considerable problem, since "350-400 people were required to catch and cling to the holding ropes and walk the vessels back to their shed". When the R34 landed in Long Island it is recorded that "Major Pritchard was landed by parachute to supervise operations." We had no such problems, as there were some substantial and well kept stiles on our routes.
