View from Sale Fell, Cumberland, October 2014

Threlkeld and Bassenthwaite

On Saturday we set off from the hospitable Horse and Farrier at Threlkeld to Bassenthwaite for our day’s walk in Cumberland. Cunningly organised so that we can park at Embleton and break this varied 8 mile walk up fells and through Forestry Commission woods at The Pheasant Inn – a splendid dark whisky-filled inn with residents areas and a walkers’ bar.

In the afternoon, in sunshine and occasional cloud, 3 of us climb Sale Fell while the 4th rests his knee. Here are fine views of Skiddaw and further afield. Despite several crocodiles of guided walkers the area is unspoiled yet with solid paths underfoot.

In the evening, to Mill Inn in Mungrisdale, where the food and drink are again excellent (do you see a pattern emerging?) and service is attentive.
