Windsor Great Park
... is a Royal Park and managed by the Crown Estate. Once part of a vast Norman hunting forest it was enclosed in the late 13th Century. Covering 2,020 hectares of parkland, it includes a mix of formal avenues, gardens, woodland, open grassland and a Deer Park. There were deer in many parts of the park, sheltering from the rain which clouded the start of our Berkshire walk. However by lunchtime at The Thatched Tavern, where we had a good lunch in cosy surroundings, the sun was out and the rest of the day was mostly fine. This is easy walking in wide open spaces, perfect for a family stroll, walking the dog or a quiet horse ride. For our purposes it was the ideal way to tick off Berkshire on our list of counties. |
