 Spreadsheets

Here are the main formulae you need for spreadsheets.

 A formula usually starts with =

* means multiply

- means subtract

+ means add

/ means divide

( ) are brackets around sums if necessary

means auto sum (automatically add a whole column, for example)

Use these formulae to make a menu and guest list for a party.

Make a spreadsheet like the one in the picture below.
I have given approximate costs of the food and drink and estimated amounts to cater for each person. You can enter your own figures. Note that column D is calculted by multiplying C and B. Column E is calculated by dividing 50 (pounds available) by D.

You have £50 to spend. Start estimating by saying that each guest will only drink one kind of drink (eg only beer or only lemonade)

What happens if you decide to spend £10 on a video?

What is the maximum number of guests you can have with or without a video?

What happens if you provide pizza and crisps?

What if you provide beer instead of lemonade?

What if all lemonade drinkers want beer?

What if you provide Coke but no lemonade? What difference does this make to the maximum number of guests?

Try more "what if" scenarios and add more parts to your spreadsheet.
